We’re pleased to report to our donors and supporters that we have successfully taken on 3 new apprentices to our bursary program so far this year, bringing the total number of trainees we are supporting in the gunmaking industry to 10, spanning London, the Midlands, the North East and Scotland.
Stefan Todd
Apprentice Engraver – John Rigby & Co.

Stefan joined John Rigby & Co. Gunmakers as an apprentice engraver in June 2005. Stefan says of his role, ‘hand engraving onto metal is a unique job, as no two projects are the same. I especially enjoy the concentration required to engrave a wild animal or an intricate piece of English scrolling; getting the fine detail of skin and fur texture correct is very rewarding.’
Stefan is being trained by renowned engraver Saija Koskialho and is being mentored throughout his apprenticeship by Master Gunmaker Allan Portsmouth.
Zac Pedlar
Apprentice Barrel Maker – Watson Brothers

Zac is an apprentice barrel maker at Watson Brothers Gunmakers in South East London. He’s been working there under Michael Louca for 18 months and started on the Apprentice Bursary Scheme in March this year.
Zac enjoys learning all of the technical and craft skills required to manufacture the finest hand-made barrels, ensuring the alignment is spot on and the interaction with the action of the gun is perfect.
Zac is mentored by Past Master Simon West OBE, who will oversee Zac’s progress for the 4 years of his apprenticeship.
Kai Burridge
Apprentice Rifle Maker – John Rigby & Co.

Kai has been awarded a 4-year bursary, commencing this month. As an apprentice Rifle maker at John Rigby & Co, Kai will learn the skills involved in producing some of the most highly sought-after British guns.
Kai has a strong interest in hunting, shooting and fishing. He has competed at a high level in target rifle disciplines, including the 10-day ‘Imperial’ Competition at The National Shooting Centre, Bisley. Outside shooting, Kai is a qualified scuba diver and a fan of country music.
Kai is being mentored by McMillan Medal winner Ian Sweetman, an experienced gunmaker with more than 20 years experience.
We wish Kai all the best as his career develops.
